Derbyshire Libraries marked Our Freedom: Then and Now with a series of creative events and exhibitions across the county, each shaped by local voices and inspired by reflections on the Second World War and the meaning of freedom today.
The programme began at Belper Library with the launch of an exhibition featuring artwork created through project workshops and a newly commissioned piece by artist Lise Bennett. The display centred on a large painted and drawn window installation incorporating community memories, thoughts on freedom and visual references to Belper. A companion artwork – a book with wire words rising from its pages – invited visitors to use their phone torches to cast enlarged shadows across the library walls and temporary blackout fabric, adding an interactive dimension to the experience.
Chesterfield Library hosted two Creative Art Journal Workshops led by artist Helen Moyes. Participants used mixed‑media techniques, craft materials and optional creative writing to explore what freedom means 80 years after VE and VJ Day. The individual squares created during these sessions were later mounted together and unveiled in a public display on 28 and 29 November, forming a collective artwork shaped by the community.
At Ilkeston Library, visitors were welcomed to the unveiling of Our Freedom: Derbyshire Reflects on WWII, a project developed through workshops with artists from Spiral Arts. People of all ages contributed memories, stories and hopes for the future, inspiring the creation of a miniature post‑war house that reflected everyday lives and the freedoms found after the Second World War. An accompanying exhibition of photographs, words and artwork showcased the voices behind the project and celebrated the collaborative process that brought it to life.
The programme concluded at Eckington Library with a Community Collage Celebration Event. Local artist Steph Coley worked with residents to create three large collage pieces inspired by contemporary reflections on freedom. The unveiling event offered the chance to meet the artists, view the completed works and share thoughts on how the theme resonated within the community. Refreshments added to the welcoming atmosphere as the artworks took their place on display in the library.
