What happened:

Throughout summer 2025, The Met worked closely with community partners ADAB, The Proud Trust and the Two Tubs pub’s Military Mondays group to explore the question “What does freedom mean to you?”, taking inspiration from the 80th anniversary of VE and VJ Day. Conversations, workshops and creative sessions with these groups helped shape a series of new musical responses reflecting how local people understand and experience freedom in 2025.

The project culminated in a special event featuring the world premiere of three original pieces of music by local artists, each created in collaboration with one of the participating community groups. These new compositions were presented alongside contributions from other local organisations who had also responded to the theme of freedom, offering a rich and varied portrait of the community’s voices, stories and perspectives.

What does freedom mean to you?

Throughout summer 2025, The Met has been working closely with community partners ADAB, The Proud Trust, and the Two Tubs pub (on their Military Mondays) to interrogate this very question, inspired by the 80th anniversary of VE and VJ Day this year.

And now you’re invited to an event featuring the world premiere of three new pieces of music by local artists, created in collaboration with these community groups to express how local people feel about freedom in 2025.

These original compositions will be shared alongside contributions from other local groups responding to the theme of freedom.
