The Our Freedom: Then & Now exhibition at The McKechnie Institute in Girvan showcased a brand‑new piece of music created by Primary 6–7 pupils from Sacred Heart Primary School. Working with writer Simon Lamb and singer Davie Hunter, and drawing on workshops with The Girvan & District Great War Project, the pupils developed a musical response inspired by the question “What does freedom mean to you?”

The exhibition brought together visual, written and recorded reflections on freedom, presenting a wide range of creative responses from the community. The newly composed music was acquired into the collections of The McKechnie Institute, Rozelle House (Accredited Collection) and South Ayrshire Libraries, where it will remain available as a prompt to read, learn from and perform. Performances were photographed and filmed, with plans for the work to tour to other local schools in 2026.

Visitors were warmly invited to explore the exhibition between 29 November 2025 and 14 February 2026, engaging with the voices, ideas and creativity that shaped this South Ayrshire contribution to the national programme.
