What does freedom mean to us today? Through art workshops that highlight the inclusivity of library spaces, and the freedom to be found in creativity, Libraries Unlimited (Devon) have invited local people to reflect on freedom, past and present, to create artworks rooted in their own community stories.

During creative workshops at the library, participants – including children from Wolborough Primary School, families at Newton’s Place Museum, and local knitting and community groups – have explored the heritage of VE Day.

Central to Newton Abbot’s story is its remarkable War Memorial, one of only three in the country to depict a woman. The ‘Figure of Freedom’, shown breaking the chains of oppression, has inspired the artworks sharing contemporary reflections on freedom.

These reflections will culminate in beautiful co-created artworks with artist Athena Jane Churchill displayed in each library in Newton Abbot, Barnstaple, and Exeter with a final showcase in Exeter uniting three distinct communities across Devon as their artworks combine into one thought provoking piece.

Come and see the evocative artwork, share what makes you feel free, and be part of the celebration.
