What does freedom mean to us today? Join Libraries Unlimited (Devon) in celebrating Our Freedom: Then and Now, a new national project marking 80 years since VE Day.
Through art workshops that highlight the inclusivity of library spaces, and the freedom to be found in creativity, local people have reflected on freedom – past and present – to create artworks rooted in their own community stories.
In Barnstaple, the artworks centre around finding peace and freedom in the face of our own challenges. Families, children, and groups that include the wonderful Flying Fish Artists – a drop-in art group for wellbeing – and the beautiful Memory CafĂ© have created art based on their own experiences and dreams of freedom.
These reflections will culminate in beautiful co-created artworks with artist Athena Jane Churchill displayed in each library in Barnstaple, Newton Abbot and Exeter with a final showcase in Exeter uniting three distinct communities across Devon, as their artworks combine into one thought provoking piece.
Come and see the evocative artwork at the opening event on Wednesday 24 September, share what makes you feel free, and be part of the celebration.
